The Fall 2014 YA Scavenger Hunt is Here!

Welcome the Fall 2014 YA Scavenger Hunt! I’m Victoria Strauss, and I write fantasy and historical fiction for adults and teens. My most recent book is Color Song, a YA historical novel with a dash of magical realism set in Renaissance Venice.

The bi-annual YA Scavenger Hunt was first organized by author Colleen Houck as a way to give readers a chance to gain access to exclusive bonus material from their favorite authors…and a chance to win some awesome prizes!

At this Hunt, you not only get access to exclusive content from each author (content that’s often not available anywhere else), you also get a clue for the Hunt. Add up the clues, and you can enter for our prize–one lucky winner will receive one signed book from me and all the other authors in my team. But play fast: this contest (and all the exclusive bonus material) will only be online until Sunday, October 5.

There are 22 contests–wait, did I say TWENTY-TWO? I meant SIX!  That’s right, six contests going on simultaneously, and you can enter one or all. I’m part of the GOLD TEAM–but there’s also a red team, a blue team, an orange team, a green team, and an indie team for a chance to win a whole different set of signed books.

(If you’re looking for my exclusive bonus content–the deleted first chapter of Color Song–keep hunting! The links will bring you there.)

To find out more about the hunt, see links to the more than 100 authors participating, and see the full list of prizes up for grabs, go to the YA Scavenger Hunt page. If you’re a newbie to the Hunt and would like to know more about how to play, see the handy How To Hunt page.

Directions: Somewhere on this page, I’ve listed my favorite number (hint: the number is highlighted in gold). Collect the favorite numbers of all the authors on the Gold Team, and then add them up (don’t worry, you can use a calculator!). You’ll find a link to the next Gold Team author at the bottom of this post.

Entry Form: Once you’ve added up all the numbers, make sure you fill out the form here to officially qualify for the grand prize. Only entries that have the correct number will qualify.

Rules: The Hunt is open internationally. Anyone below the age of 18 should have a parent or guardian’s permission to enter. To be eligible for the grand prize, you must submit the completed entry form by October 5, at noon Pacific Time. Entries sent without the correct number or without contact information will not be considered.

That takes care of the technical stuff. And now, the author I’m hosting for the Hunt:

Teri HarmanTeri Harman is an author of magic and wonder. Her debut novel, Blood Moon, a witch fantasy, is now available. The sequel, Black Moon, hits shelves September 2014 and her gothic romance, A Painted Life, early 2015.

Currently, her bookshelf is overflowing, her laundry unfolded, and her three small children running mad while she pens bewitching novels. She also writes a book column for, and contributes regular book segments to Studio 5, KSL’s popular lifestyle television show.

The book Teri is showcasing for this Hunt is Black Moon, Book 2 of the Moonlight Trilogy. Kirkus Reviews called it “A dark, realistic and intriguing thriller that evades the second book slump. Unusual and absorbing.”

I love the cover–isn’t it stunning? Black Moon CoverHere’s a synopsis:

Simon Howard accidentally killed three people. Four months later, the nightmares won’t stop. Willa Fairfield, his girlfriend, his soul mate, wants nothing more than to help him move on. But guilt isn’t the only thing getting in Simon’s way.

When unexplained earthquakes hit the small town of Twelve Acres, and dozens of people go missing, the Light witches discover their most feared enemy, Archard, is still alive. Employing the twisted, dynamic magic of a legendary witch known as Bartholomew the Dark, Archard plans to exact his revenge and take control of the Powers of the Earth on the night of the black moon, a rare lunar event infamous for Dark magic.

As the Light Covenant fumbles to defend against Archard’s sadistic intentions, Simon’s magic grows inexplicably more powerful, even dangerous. Willa throws all her efforts into solving the mystery of Simon’s transformation, but when the events of the past storm into the present, the couple’s future changes forever.
